Harvey Wiley Sugar Legacy

New York City's Mayor Bloomberg seeks to ban certain establishments from offering sugared drink sizes above 16 ounces.  No word how this shall impact my 32 ounce McDonald's *half* sweetened, *half* unsweetened habit which gives me the larger drink but with the limit of the 16 ounce size sweetened.  No mention is given to the sugar-high fructose corn syrup issue.

This makes me wonder about the pre-cigarette mercantilism days -- aka the early 1900s cocaine demonification scares of the infamous USDA-AMA-APhA drug racketeering to get people to fear cocaine in any form in order to clear the way for the increased marketing of Tobacco cigarettes -- when Coca Cola and other such soft drinks contained cocaine.  Small amounts of cocaine, often 3-4 milligrams per fluid ounce, or 6 or 7 milligrams per fluid ounce as in Coca wines such as Vin Mariani.

Do the math.  If say a Coca leaf extract or even isolated cocaine beverages contained for the sake of argument 5 milligrams per fluid ounce, we would have 35 milligrams in the 7 ounce drink; 60 mg in the 12 ounce drink; 80 in the 16; 160 in the 32; and 320 in the 64 ounce.   Such an era came when soft drink sizes were reletively low- in the 8/40 to 12/60 range; and such drinks may or may not also include caffeine, such as Coca-Cola.

Now do the logic.  Cocaine is not just a stimulant.  its also an anesthetic- drink a cocaine containing beverage  and one does not simply get a mild stimulant effect, one's stomach numbs out and one looses an appetite for more, making it somewhat self limiting.  Try it yourself with some Coca tea (I do NOT recommend using street cocaine unless perhaps one is a sufficently trained pharmacist), made with say 4 or 5 bags per large cup and you will find it way less swillable than a standard caffeine beverage or water.   Makes me wonder how much excessive consumption of sugar was initated by removing the whole coca-cocaine alkaloid from soft drinks, removing the "I am full signal" so people would drink larger servings.

I am sure there is a whole science within the food and drug and beverage industry to encourage excessive consumption, as with MSG type 'doping', and the burn aditives in cigarettes.

'Nutrition' Beverage Fraud

Advertising artificial appetite enhancement sold as "nutrition"

Today I did something that has gotten me p***ed off again.

Was out with a friend.

We go to a gasoline station/convenience store.

Each of us gets a beverage and some snacks.

The beverage I chose today was 'Chocolate Nutrament complete nutrition drink' by Nestle Nutrition.

Never heard of Nestle Nutrition till today but have long heard of Nestlie- you know the outfit founded over a century ago fond well known and liked for its chocolates.

I figure- ok, I see it has no high fructose corns syrup- a major bane of gasoline-convenience store drinkery.  Suger is the second ingredient after the first, skim milk, and the third, canola oil.  Does not sound that appetizing, but the choices are not good at such places, so I say, what the hey, I'll try it.

After its paid for I take it, crack it open and empty the contents into me.  Ok, so far.

Than fast forward about 50 minutes, and I start to feel it, BAD- a sensation I've had before with certain 'ghetto' chinese food such as the Washington DC Chinese ghetto sub sandwich which I wrote about in FMD a few years back.  Damn.  The label said nothing about MSG- mono-sodium glutamate, that horrific appetite inducer that can make on feel ravishingly hungry eve though one's stomach is full- as was my stomach upon eating one of those subs with its meat doused in that special soy sauce when its being cooked.

So what was/is it in Nestle Nutrition that acts like msg- without that substance appearing on the label?

So I try googling the forth ingredient- calcium caseinate.  And what do I find?
Calcium caseinate is a protein produced from casein in skim milk. At neutral or acid pH, casein is relatively insoluble in water, and is easily separated from other milk proteins, sugars and minerals. After their removal, the casein is solubilized at a high pH with calcium hydroxide; the solution is then dried (usually spray dried). Calcium caseinate contains about 17% glutamic acid.
Its main food uses are for powders requiring rapid dispersion into water, such as coffee creamers and instant cream soups. It is also used as a dietary supplement by bodybuilders and other athletes, who ingest it before bed, with breakfast, or as meal after working out, as it breaks down at a slower rate than whey protein, thus supplying the body with a sustained amino acid release. It is believed to neutralize capsaicin, the active (hot) ingredient of peppers, jalapeƱos, habaneros, and other chili peppers.

The word "glutamic acid" catches my eye; and what is it?
Although they occur naturally in many foods, the flavor contributions made by glutamic acid and other amino acids were only scientifically identified early in the twentieth century. The substance was discovered and identified in the year 1866, by the German chemist Karl Heinrich Leopold Ritthausen. In 1907 Japanese researcher Kikunae Ikeda of the Tokyo Imperial University identified brown crystals left behind after the evaporation of a large amount of kombu broth as glutamic acid. These crystals, when tasted, reproduced the ineffable but undeniable flavor he detected in many foods, most especially in seaweed. Professor Ikeda termed this flavor umami. He then patented a method of mass-producing a crystalline salt of glutamic acid, monosodium glutamate.[3][4]

In other words, MSG by another name.

IMHO they use this stuff not simply to improve taste, but rather to "improve" appetite" to make people ravishingly hungry when they should be anything but.

It is something that does not belong in food products in such higher concentrations (I have never had this problem with seaweed), and for a society that allowed itself to be bamboozled into the war on certain drugs'- yet another indication of the fraud of our government.

MSG- Personal Observations at "Yums" in D.C.

Makes food taste so great. That’s why its so popular in various “Fast” foods made cheaply and quickly. Does so by exciting the brain via inflamation.
Also induced hunger, extremely so.
I experience this numerous times while living in and near Washington, D.C. inside the Beltway with that areas prevalent ghetto Chinese fast food restaurants with their subs- namely their steak subs.
I loved those things. Could down an entire one almost the size of my forearm within 10 minutes.
And then crave another.
But I never went for a second in a single sitting, as I noted the size of that thing, correlating it to the approximate size of my stomach.
Along with its saltiness- though I love salt- did I really need an immediate encore?
So one evening I ordered such a sub – a place called “Yums along DC’s North Capitol Street – requesting it be made without salt so that I could regulate the amount of salt by adding such myself.
In watching its creation, I noted that they omitted a single step: not that of adding salt via a shaker, but rather in not adding what looked like a “soy” sauce – that is a dark watery liquid -- to the meat as it was being fried.
In eating it, I began adding salt, but alas not flavor. The damn thing – that is, its meat – simply was without taste. It was ok, but lacked that great taste that made me want to devour it, or another. Hmm. Without the “soy” sauce the meat was virtually flavorless, and I was no longer hungrier after eating it then previously.
Hmm. Welcome to my isolation of the effects of MSG.
Interesting how a society that bans certain drugs out of a supposed puritanical- religious ban against indulgences allows, indeed tolerates such a substance.
Let alone a society supposedly so concerned about "addiction."
